In the heart of Koivukylä, Vantaa, there is a place where loneliness dissolves into conversation, where the smell of free coffee mixes with the sound of children playing, and where immigrants, long-time residents, and local organizations come together as neighbors. It is officially called a "Community Space," but those who use it have a warmer name for it: our shared living room.

What is a Community Space?

Maintained by the City of Vantaa, the Koivukylä community space is an open and free-of-charge meeting place under the Urban Culture and Wellbeing Division. It is part of the city’s Youth and Community Services, designed to be accessible to everyone. Located conveniently near public transport, these spaces exist across Vantaa with a single, powerful mission: to strengthen community spirit, promote inclusion, and provide support for residents of all ages.

A Place to Do, Learn, and Connect

Step inside during opening hours, and you will find a hub of quiet activity and warm interaction. This is not a passive space; it is a place to get involved. Visitors can join hobby groups, participate in multicultural events, or simply sit down for a chat.

For those navigating modern life, the space offers practical support. Public computers are available for use, and digital assistance is on hand to help residents access online services, particularly on Mondays and Thursdays. For many immigrants, the community space is a vital first step into Finnish society, offering beginner-level Finnish courses and conversation groups in partnership with the Vantaa Adult Education Centre.

The Heart of the Home: Food and Togetherness

The "living room" feeling comes alive most vividly during mealtimes. A community chef prepares weekly Community Lunches every Wednesday, utilizing surplus food from the "Shared Table" initiative. These meals are about more than just eating; they are about sharing a table and building bonds.

Equally popular are the Networking Coffee Events, where local organizations and volunteers gather to share ideas, exchange news, and collaborate. These relaxed meetings help reduce overlapping efforts and foster a spirit of cooperation that strengthens the entire neighborhood.

Creativity, Wellness, and Play

The schedule at Koivukylä is rich and varied. Twice a month, the space hosts physical activities like fitness classes and health lectures. For the creatively inclined, there is karaoke, community art projects, a music club, and monthly movie screenings. The walls themselves tell a story, hosting rotating art exhibitions a few times a year where local artists—from painters to handicrafters—can display their work free of charge.

For families, a dedicated children’s play area offers a safe space for the little ones, though they must remain under a guardian's supervision. Meanwhile, others might be found in a quiet corner playing chess, enjoying a game of ping pong, or simply reading the news.

Who Makes It Run?

The magic of the space is a collaborative effort. It is guided by city community workers and a dedicated community chef, but it is powered by volunteers, student interns, and a wide network of partners. Strong ties with local multicultural organizations, the library, youth services, and the Vantaa & Kerava wellbeing area ensure that the space is a true community anchor.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Visitors often describe the atmosphere with words like cozy, open, friendly, and safe. It is a place where an immigrant learning Finnish might find a friend and later return as a volunteer leading a craft group. It is where a wellness day or a "Welcome to Vantaa" event can spark new ideas for making the neighborhood even better.

The message from the team is simple and heartfelt: "Come and join us! This is your common living room—a place to meet people, learn new things, and feel at home. Everyone is welcome!"

Whether you are looking for digital help, a hot meal, a creative outlet, or just good company, the doors are open. Check the schedule for a fitness class, stop by for the community lunch, or just drop in for a cup of coffee. In Koivukylä, there is always a place for you at the table.
