Vanitsri Tirkkonen is the founder and chairwoman of The Finnish Thai Association ry and the executive director of Almesrah ry. Her work is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and supporting the Thai community in Finland.
ALMESRAH signifies a stage of life, highlighting that our lives are filled with events where we perform on our own stages. Vanitsri has been at the forefront of initiatives that assist fellow Thais in adapting to Nordic life and support Asian SMEs in Finland. Her flagship event, Sawasdee Thailand and Asian Friendship, celebrates cultural diversity and strengthens ties between Finland and Asia.
About Vanitsri Tirkkonen

Journey to Finland
Vanitsri moved to Finland in 1993 to pursue postgraduate studies at Helsinki University of Technology (Aalto University). Since then, she has established her life and career in Finland, focusing on multicultural consulting, teaching Thai language and culture, and organizing international congresses and Asian promotional events.

Life in Finland
Vanitsri describes her life in Finland as a rewarding journey that required adjustments. Initially, the harsh winters posed a challenge, but she has come to embrace the cold and darkness, enjoying the unique joys of the seasons. Adapting to Finnish culture required an open mind, and she has found the people to be warm, honest, and reliable once acquainted.
Sawasdee Thailand and Asian Friendship
The Sawasdee Thailand and Asian Friendship festival is a vibrant cultural branding event held in the heart of Helsinki at Narinkkatori, Kamppi. It celebrates Asian diversity with traditional and modern designs, holistic wellness, authentic food, and performances, aiming to enhance the image of Asian nations, foster cross-cultural networking, and promote tourism.

Inspiration and Support
Vanitsri's inspiration for organizing such a significant event stems from her deep patriotism and desire to support her fellow citizens. She has been supported by dedicated working groups, Asian community volunteers, cooperative associations like Almesrah ry, and local Thai businesses. Her team consists of passionate board members, foreign students, marketers, event coordinators, and Asian artists who work together to strengthen the Asian community.
Challenges in Organizing Festivals
Vanitsri identifies the biggest challenges in organizing large festivals as managing dynamic logistics, including unexpected visa issues, fluctuating weather conditions, and funding. She overcomes these challenges by building strong contingency plans, maintaining open communication with partners, and remaining flexible to adapt quickly to changes.
Staying Focused
To stay focused while organizing large-scale events, Vanitsri splits duties into manageable tasks, dividing the workload into specific departments such as marketing, logistics, vendor relations, and cultural programs. By effectively delegating and trusting her core team, she can concentrate on the broader vision of the event.
The Role of Volunteers
Volunteers are considered the heart of the festivals. Their dedication, whether as traditional dance teams, booth assistants, or local students, is profoundly inspiring. Vanitsri finds that the collaboration between the Finnish-Thai and broader Asian community reinforces the purpose of organizing these events.
Event Success and Feedback
The festival has grown significantly in popularity and success over the years, consistently receiving positive feedback. Attendees appreciate the opportunity to enjoy authentic Asian food, cultural dances, and a genuine sense of community, breaking down cultural barriers in the center of Helsinki.
Memorable Experiences
Some of Vanitsri's most unforgettable memories occur during the festival's opening ceremonies. The sight of representatives from various Asian cultures, local Finnish residents, and performers in traditional garments creates a beautiful image of harmony. Collaborations between Thai chefs and Finnish youth learning traditional dances epitomize the success of the "Friendship" theme.
Final Inspiring Message
Vanitsri leaves readers with a powerful message: "Cultural diversity is a bridge that connects us all. By sharing our heritage with an open heart, we create a global community rooted in mutual respect, love, and understanding. Never underestimate the power of your community to make a positive, lasting impact on society."
