In Finland, Finnish love to eat porridge for breakfast. Porridge is a very healthy and nutritious meal. It is quick, easy to prepare and can be adjusted according to personal preferences.

Ready in: 5-15 minutes Makes about 1½ cups

Add water


  • ¾ cup oat flakes

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

  • Pinch of sea salt

  • ¼ cup fresh berries (optional)

  • ½ ripe banana, sliced (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons chopped nuts, such as walnuts, pecans, or cashews (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons dried fruit, such as raisins, cranberries, chopped apples, chopped apricots (optional)

Add fruits, nuts or seeds. Eat it with butter or margarine or sugar or try various berry soups.


Combine the oats and 1½ cups water in a small saucepan.

Bring to a boil over high heat.

Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook until the water has been absorbed, about 5 minutes. Stir in the cinnamon and salt.

Top with the berries, banana, nuts, and/or dried fruit, as you like.

Serve hot.


Choose different flakes such as rye, wheat, barley, millet, buckwheat flakes and mix them. For a better and more delicious result, add 2/3 of oat flakes because of their sweet and nice taste and then 1/3 of any other flakes.
